May 6: Karen Minden, Founder of the Pine River Institute

Karen has created a miracle in Dufferin County - the envy of people who work with adolescents around the world.

Margaret Wente, in The Globe and Mail, says it is a must for you to learn about in 2013. Besides becoming one of Mulmur Township’s largest employers, Karen has built a staff and program that has literally saved the lives of hundreds of young people who have had difficulties with substance abuse, emotional and physical challenges, and alienation.

The Dufferin Arts Council has played a part in this success as our artists and storytellers have worked with these young people. Art is a powerful tool that can change lives!

This is an incredible story. Parents can’t believe the changes in their adolescent’s lives. The waiting list is long as the success of the program speaks for itself.

Artist in the Spotlight - Ken Hall

With my work, I seek to harmonize the natural and spiritual world with our modern lifestyles, bringing balance to our souls.

Artist Biography

Ken spent over 12 years in the UK as an Art Director in the computer games industry, publishing several award-winning and ground breaking titles. He decided to return to his roots as a sculptor, and came back to Canada in 2008 to focus on creating artwork full-time and now creates fine art and architectural sculpture in stone, metal, and wood.

Ken has completed corporate commissions for clients including Summer Fresh Salads and Antofagasta Minerals, and civic commissions for Downtown Georgetown and the Orangeville Courthouse. Ken recently created the branding and interior design for the Bistro Burger Joint restaurant in Alliston, fabricating hand-made wood and steel furniture and fixtures and melding these with cutting-edge graphic elements.

He has attended prestigious shows such as the McMichael Autumn Art Sale, and undertakes public installations. He was featured as an ‘Artist to Collect’ in Arabella - Canadian Art, Architecture & Design, and was a finalist for the 2011 NICHE award in the Outdoor Art category.

Artist Statement

I am inspired by the delicate balance between strength and fragility that is present in nature. I aim to capture the light and ethereal qualities of natural creation while crafting pieces with substance and permanence. I strive to distill the essence of the world around me and express that energy in three dimensional forms, showcasing  my inspiration and giving it voice with beauty and grace.

Linda Jenetti Awarded Reed T. Cooper Bursary

At the January luncheon, Linda Jenetti was  presented with the fifth Reed T. Cooper Bursary in Visual Arts. 

This award of $3,000 is made annually to a local professional artist who displays a unique talent and potential for excellence. As Gary Vipond, Past President of the Arts Council, and Chair of the Selection Committee, pointed out at the presentation, it is made possible through generous donations to the Bursary Fund by members of DAC.

Gary introduced the winning artist and spoke about her active involvement with the local art scene, which included the Kame & Kettle Artists (Past President and former Secretary) and the Orangeville Art Group (former Secretary). Linda was one of the original members of the Dufferin (then Shelburne) Arts Council (former Secretary), has participated in the Hills of Mulmur Studio Tour, North of 89 Studio Tour, Headwaters Studio Tour and the Headwaters Arts Festival and other local art shows. She is also one of the artists/teachers with DAC’s Artists in the Schools program. Farther afield she has shown with the Colour and Form Society, the Society of Canadian Artists, and Visual Arts Mississauga.

Linda has been accepted into many juried shows over the years and received several awards. In 2011 she received the Jurors’ Choice Award at the Headwaters Arts Festival held at the SGI Centre near Alton.

Educated at the Ontario College of Art, the Vancouver School of Art and the Artists’ Workshop (Toronto), Linda has also attended workshops and studied with other artists, including Harold Klunder and Peter Kolisnyk. Last spring (2012) she attended the International School of Art, in Monte Castello di Vibo, Umbria (Italy).

After the award presentation, Linda spoke briefly about her upcoming project. She intends to return to Umbria next May, using her award money for tuition at the International School. Last year she was struck by the similarities and differences between the landscapes of Umbria and Mulmur. She wants to continue her research and develop a body of work that will demonstrate those comparisons and contrasts. She has a commitment to mount a solo show at the Bartlett Gallery in Alton in May, 2014.

Jane Cooper, whose husband Reed was a fellow Kame & Kettle member, and had participated with Linda in many local exhibitions and studio tours, presented the award to Linda and wished her much success.

April 28 - Brahms Requiem

The Achill Choral Society celebrates 30 years with a performance of this choral masterwork. Conducted by A. Dale Wood and featuring Stephanie Kramer, soprano, and Kirk Lackenbauer, bass.

April 27 - Caledon Chamber Concert with Leslie Newman & Erica Goodman

Leslie Newman, piano, and Erica Goodman, harp will present a program that includes music by Bach, Saint-Saens, and the late Ravi Shankar. 

The concert takes place at St. James' Church, Caledon East.
